Skippers:

I am in the process of refinishing the teak in my cabin sole. I will be finishing up the prep stage this weekend and wanted to know your thoughts about sealant and varnish products. As of now, I'm leaning toward Interlux brand sealant and satin gloss varnish. However, Cetol seems to have a nice product and there are some other manufacturers that sound good too. Any recommendations? Thanks.

Endurance,

I have used, and would give serious consideration to the product called "Ultimate Sole" as the both the sealant and final coatiing. I sanded down all my sole boards on my 1990 H-33.5 and put 2 coats of Ultimate Sole on them. It flows very well, is very durable, and looks great. Use a foam brush. In a few years you can, if needed, do a very light sanding and add another new coat. I was VERY satisfied with it. The manufacturer of it is somewhere in CT. Try Googling Ultimate Sole.

Thanks Nav. I Googled Ultimate Sole and apparently they are out of business. However, lots of people swear by their product. Perhaps we can buy the formula, have it made in China, and do our share to bring the price of sailing down, and of course, stick it to West Marine.
