Interior Teak Finish

I just spent the weekend oiling the teak in my O'day 28 using Watco Teak oil. The interior had not seen a good cleaning and oiling in some time so it was a bit of a job,(!) I followed the directions and the end result looks pretty good. As always, the better the prep the better the finish. I was just wondering if anyone out there has used Watco and if so how the long term results were.....How often for a redo, oil build up, or even better suggestions??? Thanks, max

I have used other Watco products and they seem to be high quality. I am not sure about their durability in a marine environment though.

I find I have to oil yearly using just Ace Hardware lemon oil, so I'm interested in hearing what others use. I have been pondering varnishing the interior, but it is WAY down the priority list.

Like Bob, I lean more to lemon oil or the newer orange oils as they seem to clean better and don't darken the teak as much. Too many years of teak oil tends to really darken the wood.

Make sure your lemon or orange oils do not contain silicone. If you ever decide to varnish you will have all kinds of problems.

We just discussed this a few weeks back and the general consensus was Formby's Tung Oil available from Home Depot or Lowes was your best bet. Shines beautifully and lasts for years. Goes on with a rag like water. Has some amount of varnish resins in it so it has a similar shine and durability.

Thanks guys! Silicone can be a nightmare. The Formby's sounds great. I'd like little more protection and gloss without much more effort.

I use Westco teak oil on both my boats and am very happy with not only the way it made the teak look but how well it hold up.

The hatch boards went neglected for 15 yrs before I oiled them.

Id suggest McCloskeys "Tung Seal" ... and you can buy it with various 'tints'.

Secondly, I'd suggest 'resinating' your teak oil. Mix 25% oil-based varnish to 75% 'oil finish' - apply 'thick'. You can mix up to 50:50. Such a finish can be as 'brite' as straight varnish ... but can be 'removed' easily with TSP as any 'oil finish' will eventually turn as 'dark as a tomb' and will eventually have to be stripped/removed.

Ultimately, oil based varnish is THE interior boat finish. Doesnt 'go dark' after many years. Too bad that most 'varnishers' never 'finish' their jobs - handrubbing, etc.

I have jest finished my interior and seen this post and tryed Formby's Tung Oil and have put two coats on and it looks great. I'll put another two on tomarrow. It looks like a new boat on the inside. Know I need to start on the outside soon.

I tried the Watco's Teak oil (natural) yesterday. I tried the quick and dirty approach applying a good coat with a clean rag. First impressions are good. The wood took on a shine I can't recall with the lemon oil I had used in the past. I plan to second coat it later.
