Hi Woody, wow, incredible looking floor! :)

Questions:

1. Did you apply the adhesive to both (floor and underside of plywood)? Or just to the floor? I can't even see the seam for the two pieces of plywood....you have done a great job!
2. Did you apply the varnish before installing the teak and holly flooring? If you applied it before you laid it down, how did you get such a tight/un noticeable seam running down the middle? I was going to apply varnish to the edges and if I do, the seam will surely show...right?
3. Would you use the same varnish, again? I'm really concerned about the water seeping in through the edges of the plywood since that is what happened to the original flooring - discoloring it to the point where I couldn't bring it back by bleaching it.

I'll try to remember to send you photos as the work is completed....many thanks for the help along the way....Don
i put the adhesive on the floor only

i put the finish on after the install ...i used a water based poly urithaine by Parks and a rust oleium water based sanding sealer the seam is noticeable but no big woop its about 6 inches from the starboard side base if you seal the edges first just hand block sand them before the install use a good flat block and sand long strokes and not to maney of them

as far as using the finish again i don't know as of now only time will tell as for sealing the edges when it all set up if you have a gap on the edges run some floor finish in the gap and use it liberally and it will seal that up if trowel the adhesive correctly with the serrated edge trowel you should have no problems under it or preseal them

an add to some used a sitka flex product not 3m 4200 my mistake

as for the seam make sure you don't make it on the edge of the holly only in the middle of the teak never work the edge of the holly..... it is an inlay and may work loose over time

thanks for the praise and good luck

Hi Woody, I could not find Sikabond T21 anywhere in the Midwest! And, I need to do this project on Monday. So, I'm headed to Home Depot and buying a bunch of cartridges of Locktite PL adhesive. It comes in tubes. You indicate that you use a serrated trowel to spread it...so, I guess you apply the adhesive from the tubes with a caulk gun to the bottom side of the new Teak and Holly wood floor (after dry fitting it) and spread it out with the trowel and then set it in place - right? It comes in 28 oz tubes (larger tubes)...how many tubes did you need?

Did you also nail the floor down with the small (stainless steel?) nails which were in the original floor or not? Seems a shame to nail into the floor but maybe you need to do that to assure it lays down at the joints/seams?

Thanks for the help! Don

Columbia 36 Muskegon
My Columbia 36 had the same sort of post just inside the companionway. Convenient handhold, 45 years old and dirty as hell. All the interior teak was nasty dirty brown and looked like they painted it brown with something that wasn't paint. I think the PO's just slobbered a fresh coast of oil on out every year without cleaning it first. I ended up just dancing out down with 120 and 220 grit paper. Had to do the post by hand because of the curves, but it wasn't that hard to do.
