Please help me to find the best way to replace the contact paper on the walls of our 1975 O'Day. It's a great boat in super condition!

"Contact"

I have no experience here, but I would probably start with your local paint store. Be sure they know what is behind the contact paper though. Good luck.

Used Berber Carpet

Hi George, Did the interior of my 1978 O'Day 27 this spring. Original was a thin fabric glued to the hull. Pulled that off and removed the residue (fabric backing and glue) with a stiff brush after trying sanding and scraping. Used a Berber carpet (a lot thicker than the cloth removed) from Home Depot and bonded with water based carpet adhesive. Pre cut carpet to fit each section. Followed instructions on adhesive. Had concern that the carpet might not stay in full contact (bubbles). Found the next morning I could just press any loose areas and it bonded. Looks great! Should take you no more than 8 hours. I did it in 10 but spent 2 hours sanding 25% and removed the rest in 20 minutes with a stiff brush. Also spent an hour or so making forms to hold the carpet to the hull. Found that was not necessary. The carpet adhesive sets up enough to hold the carpet in place and allow you to slide it into final position on installation. The glue gets more tacky with time so you can press any areas that are not in full contact the next day. I replaced the cushions the year before and my wife did the interior wood this spring so now the interior looks better than new. Hope this helps and Good Luck, Bob

Thanks for the tips

I am also looking to redo the interior of my 1978 22 to get rid of the original glued-on fabric. It's pretty gross. The original adhesive has mostly failed and turned to a cheese-like substance in some spots. I was wondering to to get this stuff off. I was thinking about installing some interior fabric from Sailrite, but now I'm gling to look into the carpet idea as well.
