I have an 85 Catalina 30 with the original interior cushions, which are now somewhat worn and dated. The Catalina factory quoted a price of almost $3,000 for new covers and cushions. That seems a bit pricey- would rahter spend some of that on a new roller furler, sails, etc. so looking for a less expensive source of new interior cushion covers that will still be of good quality and match the originals. I recall that for a number of issues the Catalina Mainsheet had an ad for replacement Catalina cushions for around $1,200 or so but the ad is not in the latest Mainsheet- maybe they went out of business? Any recommendations on a good source to have cushions recovered at less than $3,000? Thanks.

If your foam is ok, I would try a local upholstery shop. I would also call Indy Canvas...they do great work. Good luck

Thanks,Stephen

Thanks for the tip. Since I'm in the Bay area where labor rates seem to be the highest in the country, not sure a local shop will be any cheaper than Catalina factory but at least I'll be supporting a local business.

Try this

David, I have the same problem with my '85 Catalina 30. I asked my local Catalina dealer if he had any ideas. He suggested calling, going around auto upholstry shops. I haven't done it yet since I have other more pressing issues with the boat, but it sounded like a good idea. You buy the fabric, and take the foam to a few downtown shops. Dave

What we did.

Dave, In 2003 we needed to replace all the foam and covering material in our 1990 Island Packet 38. We were in Mobile Alabama at the time and found (in the yellow pages) a foam rubber warehouse and commercial fabric dealer. These dealers buy up remenant ends of fabric rolls from furnature manufactures. These type of dealers are in most large cities and I'd be almost positive there is one in your area. These rolls all had more than enough material to do all the cushions the same. Here's the outragous part. The cut to fit, higher grade than orginal, foam was less than $200. The upholstery was another $200. It took my wife one long day to sew all this together using the original covers for patterns. We took the original fabric off the foam and took the rubber to this place and they cut the new foam cushions exactly the same size. All this was done while we were living aboard and crusing. It was done with her home sewing machine that we had brought with us. The results were outstanding and very much an improvment over the originals. Now buy all the rest of the goodies with the savings. Ray
