I am preparing to repaint the interior of my cabin. Some have suggested using a Marine grade paint, others have said to use a good exterior house paint. Can anyone make a recommendation one way or the other? I have also heard theories that exterior house paints can give off fumes that may build up in the cabin over time. Any truth to this? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What surfaces will you be painting?

I am sure that we would all like to know a bit more. Are you paining over the gelcoat, wood or metal. I once redid my cabin sole etc while living on the boat so I have some great stories on fumes! Bit more info would help. For instance on wood you might need sealer or undercoat, on gelcoat, you need to properly sand and dewax etc (or maybe just restore). On metal you will need correct primer and pretreatment etc. I have restored and painted several cars etc so I know that the latter is important. Thanks Jim W

Used Alklyd Enamel .. worked fine

I used an off-white alklyd(?where's the spell check when you need it?) enamel, good quality, from home depot when I redid my head in my 1980 H33. I lightly sanded (very lightly) and cleaned everything with acetone. After it dried, two coats seemed to cover everything well, including the "grass cloth" bulkhead covering - looks great, wipes off easily - I'd use it again.Took all the teak off and refinished - looks great, now the admiral wants the entire boat to look that way!!! careful what you start.

Thanks, Jims

Thanks for the input. Jim, I am actually painting just about all of those surfaces. I have removed the headliner and plan to just sand and paint the roof and replace the teak. I am also painting some of the wood cabinets.

Fumes

I'm no chemist so I can't say with authority whether fumes build up as you suggest but I used an exterior enamel paint on my lazerettes and some interior portions of my boat. Yup, stunk like h-e-double toothpicks while it was drying but I haven't smelled a whiff since. LaDonna
