The interior cabin hull covering on my O'Day 23 is coming off. It appears to be something like indoor/outdoor carpeting with a foam back attached to the hull. The carpet is in pretty good shape but it is the foam that is deteriorating and I will have to scrape the remaining foam off the hull. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to reafix the carpet? Do I need a layer of foam? What do I use/how do I attach the foam to the hull and then the carpet to the foam? Replacing it all is an option - what do I use? THANKS!

Hull Liner
I just replaced mine last year and used indoor/outdoor carpet. The local Home Depot only had two colors (gray and green) but by going to a carpet shop, I got a lot better selection. We used construction paper taped to the hull to make a template and then cut the carpet in the driveway. We used an odor-free adhesive recommended by the carpet store. It worked great and made a huge difference. Good Luck.

Charlyc "I glued the new liner with contact cement from home depot that comes in a gallon can (1 3/4 gallons worth). " Did you happen to use the latex or water base contact cement to avoid the fumes?? Also did you need to coat both the liner material and the hull surfaces with the cement? When ever I have worked with contact cement it seems you have just one chance to apply the fabric cause once you touch the two surfaces together they are stuck.. Was this a problem?

I did not use the water based and I found that the fumes were not that bad (I think). I coated both surfaces with the glue which is a must on contact cement. Putting in place was not that bad and you could pull off at least once. I thought I would have more of a problem but it went smooth. The liner was divided in 6 peaces bow, Bath area and main cabin. It is not as bad as it seems. I you want more pictures I can post some more or e-mail direct.

I am still in anticipation stage.. I put a deposit on an 86 222 O'Day and am looking at the lining.from pix's. It seems loose but won't know what I have till I see the boat. (purchasing off the internet.) I once fixed a headliner in an old Crown Victoria that was hanging down. It also had the foam backing that was crumbling. Took off the trim and the cardboard headliner pop out and I brushed off the old foam then used Arlenes Tackey Glue and glued the cloth back to the cardboard.. Wasn't spongey but looked fine and matched all the trim and came out nice.

Thanks for the advice. I have yet to uncover Zthe boat for this season so I still have time to plan my attack. Do you think I still need the foam layer - the carpet was in pretty good condition the last time I saw it
so I might be able to get away with just glueing it directly to the hull.
