I am thinking of buying a 1995 Catalina. It had a leak on the starboard side and water ran down the interior bulkheads and removed the clear coat finish and discolored the wood. Is this ash wood? Is the finish a varnish? Was a stain used? I am hoping to just touch this up rather than re-surface the whole starboard side.

Should be Teak, finish was varnish and many

of the websites for the various boat organizations will have the info on the exact finish used. Try www.catalina27.org or whichever boat you are looking at for the owners manuals etc. for the specific boat. You will need to sand to bare wood and smooth surface (water tends to raise the grain in woods) and if it's discolored you will need to clean or bleach. For real light spot touch-ups on an otherwise good finish I've used a wipe-on poly-u but it takes many applications.

Varnish

It is Target varnish. (water based). I have seen some negative comments on this product, but from my experience, it touches up really fine, and looks great!! Cant even see the touch ups! For DEEP sanding , you may want their sealer, also. Doug Target Fone 800 752 9922
