Interior and exterior wood

I have a '84 Hunter 28.5. Two questions: 1) what is the best wood dressing for the interior wood? I've used Teak oil which seems to be absorbed fast and still results in mold on the wood within a week or so. 2) Has anyone found a replacement source for the wood deck handles that are forward on the cabin top? Mine became loose and was ripped off by a genoa sheet during a tack. How about metal replacements? While we are at, it has anyone found an exact replacement for the port screens? or the wood edging in the cabin V-bearth are? I know it a lot but I'm not getting much help form Hunter. Thanks.

Try this...

For the interior wood on my H31 I use a household product called Liquid Gold. It lasts a few months, and I haven't had any problem with mold... although the climate in SFO may be a bit more salubrious in that regard. I used it the first time just because I had it around the house, and now I've been using it for about 3 years. I'll read your posts, and I'm sure you'll get other suggestions, and probably we'll both learn a thing or two. Don't know squat about the other issues. Sorry. Good luck - Rick

Varnish!

I have an H240 with teak wood inside and outside. I tried using a teak cleaner/oil kit several times, but the outside teak still turned gray again after a few weeks, and the inside teak absorbed the oil (didn't look any different). In a sailing course I took this past June, the instructor (of 31 years experience) said to varnish the teak with good marine varnish (3 or 4 coats). I did that a month ago, and it looks super.

Teak Grab Rails

The teak grab rails are available thru West Marine (on line) and will look good if finished with Semco Oil Based Sealer (natural) twice a season after cleaning with a mild solution of household bleach and water or sanding with 100 grit paper. Since there are four of them it might make sense to replace one teak rail rather than re-fit the boat for four of the much more expensive stainless steel types with twice as many fasteners into the deck.
