Interesting wingsail development video

These have been around for a few years now.... it is an interesting design. The main engineering feature is the stay less mast. .....I have had my eye on a few other interesting sail designs revolving around the old Polynesian crab claw sail..
two newer developments include using a triangular set of masts on a catamaran...
Or a T-post option to tack the sail. I like this one a lot... in theory you can raise the "foot" of the sail as a form of reefing... and in effect the lift on the sail would have a component in the vertical direction and should serve to effectively lighten the boat as you reef....and should make you go even faster as you "shorten" sail.
... and your sail can double as a bimini
One of these days.... when I have a lot of free time and extra money.....

I don't think the jibe is all that different than a Nonsuch. Not that I like that a lot.
I don't understand why the so called wing stops so far forward. Why does the aft control surface, which isn't wing shaped, have to be so large? Is that because the velocity of the boat is in the single digit area?
436 lbs for the rig? That seems reasonable for a 40' boat if it includes the sail.

how do you reef something like that ?? I didn't think the jibe was that bad, a normal main would shake the boat as the main hits the end of the sheet travel, it did slow as it moved forward, where a normal main would continue to accelerate.
Wing mast, slotted foils tend to show up in vessels that travel fast such as ice boats. Im not an expert on this.. and of course wont let that stop me from giving my opinion.. but the wing sail or slotted foil masts/sails generate somewhat higher lift but they also generate way less drag doing so.. Ie, the L/D ratio is a lot higher. Note that the equations for lift and drag all have the wind speed square term in them. Ie, double the wind speed and all the lift and drag force components go up by a factor of four. In a vessel that is speed limited by wave making drag (like most sailboats), the drag component going up with the square of wind speed doesn't matter much. But on an ice boat where you might be doing 3 to 10X wind speed, the drag component becomes very important. You must keep drag low for those high speeds..
