Wing mast, slotted foils tend to show up in vessels that travel fast such as ice boats. Im not an expert on this.. and of course wont let that stop me from giving my opinion.. but the wing sail or slotted foil masts/sails generate somewhat higher lift but they also generate way less drag doing so.. Ie, the L/D ratio is a lot higher. Note that the equations for lift and drag all have the wind speed square term in them. Ie, double the wind speed and all the lift and drag force components go up by a factor of four. In a vessel that is speed limited by wave making drag (like most sailboats), the drag component going up with the square of wind speed doesn't matter much. But on an ice boat where you might be doing 3 to 10X wind speed, the drag component becomes very important. You must keep drag low for those high speeds..
