What I think. I don't have any interest in racing so it doesn't suit me.
National Geographic had a story about Scotland years ago and had pictures of retired herring boats cut into sections, turned deck down and make into shepherds cabins.
I had an aunt that lived in the deck house of a Lake Winnipesaukee, NH steamer that had been taken out of service.

Why not. Looks like a great idea as long as the rig/keel design changes work and the boat is safe. Personally I would not put that HA main on her. It ruins her classic looks but to each his own.

Purests need not criticize as they were not waiting in line to do a restore.

Hard to believe that no one has come forward for Seasmoke. Move that boat to Lake Erie and it's mine! I don't even have time to keep my plastic boat like I want it. But traditionalist that I am the K-40 would be perfectly restored. For me it would be just as much a daysailer as she was originally designed. It might take me ten years but that boat deserves to be saved.

There were two other people interested in the boat. However, they were not willing to commit THAT DAY. I had to commit, though I couldn't really afford it or she was toothpicks the very next day. While I would much rather return her to bristol, I will do that conversion to keep both her alive and my shop open if it comes to that....

I think its much better to modify her than let her rot or be cut up for firewood. You can do some really creative things with an old hull.

I know its not quite the same, but there's a guy in Maine that has done some really great things with old fiberglass hulls. Here are two links to his site (which by the way, is one of the best I have ever seen). The first is a link to his "Daysailer" project, where he took a derelict Pearson Triton, stripped it to a bare hull, and completely rebuilt her as a daysailer:

I have seen a few thirty something cabin cruisers stripped to their shear and converted to center consol open fishing boats for a dozen people. It makes very good use of the hull and engine. I don't know what provision they make for a head.

Geez Mike, wish you hadn't posted that 'lackeysailing' link. I just spent the last hour there. Did you see his "boat barn"? Very interesting project. And here I am wondering if I should put my little 20' Highlander in the garage as a winter project.
