I got laid off from Boeing after almost five years and I got this:

Grandchild number seven. Aubrey Ann was born to Christopher and Alishia at 1:39 PM 3/30/2009 at a weight of 8Lbs 10 Oz and 21" in length. I guess I have some time to work on Oh Joy now eh?

Go sailing for a couple of weeks and then worry about the lay off, or not.

I spent the last several years of my work life in training for retirement - by going unemployed four to six months per year. (I worked in construction.) It made things a bit tight at times, but life is short...
Congratulations to you and your kids for your new grandchild. As you already know, being a grandparent is way better than being a parent! In fact, I'm trying to figure out a scheme to go from being without kids directly to being a grandparent, without the inconvenience of parenthood in between. When I get it figured out, I'm going to patent it and become a millionaire!
By the way, do you take your grandchildren out sailing?

Early Retirement & Sailing

Charlie, I decided to take an early retirement from a job that was very well paying and one that was a lot of fun but a real pressure cooker too. Otherwise, I would have retired this year which was the mandatory limit. So, that was seven years ago. I have done offshore sailing, distance racing, and cruised our SoCal waters. We have also just hung around on the boat a whole lot and I have saved a bunch by having the time to do much of my own work.

You have no idea how glad I am that I did. It was scary to have my income cut by two thirds and then to pick up all my healthcare costs. We sold our house and bought down in a less expensive area. We started being careful with our expenses. People told me we would find we could live on a lot less and indeed, we could.

If I would have waited until now to retire, I would have continued to give up vacation time, be recalled when I did take it, would have had to steal days for sailing trips, made a bunch more money, and very probably died. If I hadn't I would be retiring with a bunch of health issues which effectively restrict my cruising grounds to SoCal and vicinity. So, there you go. That's my story, so if you have any parallels, give some thought to it.

Congratulations Charlie- And the best of luck to you. Murphy's law says the faster you finish your boat and start having fun sailing, the faster you get called back to work!

Good luck with job hunting!

I'll bet that grandkids and sailing will make the free time worthwhile! I've been out of work for several months now and it is not a good time to be looking for work! To make matters worse ... it's the off season for sailing and we really cut back significantly on skiing over concern for the future. We are at that stage in life where the kids are out of the house, but none of them are starting families, yet (they don't even appear to be close to that stage in life). I need to be making a nice income in preparation for retirement but that's been disrupted (and the 401k/IRA investments are a disaster)!

With some decent prospects for work, my wife is teasing me that I should be back at work just about the time the sailboat is splashed! I've been working on some sailboat projects and finishing the basement!

Good luck for the future ... grandma looks happy! Ross, I'd bet just about anybody looks young to you! ;)
