Why do you need a cradle for the mast?

Mast support for canal transit

Going down the intercoastal waterway next year. I need to make cradle for mast. Have 30ft Catalina. Need suggestion Thanks Terry
We are also thinking of transiting the Erie Barge Canal. Is there any way that the mast can be shipped to this side of NYC where I understand the mast can be put up again. Thanks Garry

Terry - The support for the mast is very simple. I used two 2 x 10s upright across the bow pulpit in the shape of a T. Did the same for the stern. I supported the mast in the middle with a saw horse. Tied the mast down and off we went. I secured the mast off center on the port side of the boat. This made it easy to tie up on the starboard side at the locks. If you come via Buffalo give me a shout & I will be glad to help. RCR Marina is the place to have the mast unsteped in Buffalo. If you would like copies of our ship's log for the trip let me know & I will be happy to e-mail them to you. You will love the trip.
