Bill, I have two problems that I need some guidance on. First, is a course swing of or - 20 degrees. There are enough prior articles addressing this issue that I will try them first before I come back to you. The second however, is confusing me. I have four leads on the Garmin 45( a handheld with a stand); the white data in, which I have connected to the AH4000 NMEA -; the Garmin brown data out, which I have connected to the NMEA ; the Garmin red power to the AH4000 12V ; and the Garmin black ground to the AH4000 12V -. Having done this I only get dashes on the course data sheets on my 4000. I have activated the interface program on the Garmin 45 to option - None/NMEA, with settings at NMEA 0183 version 2.0. Sorry for all the detail; I am somewhat braindead when it comes to electronics and I am attempting to be accurate. What do I need to correct to get my 4000 working? Thanks for all your effort and an excellent forum. John Blakely

GPS to the Autopilot

The Autopilot can not talk to your GPS. You need to disconnect the white wire from the autopilot and run a wire from the Autopilot's NMEA IN- to battery ground. This is because their unit does not have a NMEA OUT-.

Same problem

Before you connect the wires take a voltmeter set in DC to the smallest unit. When you touch the wires Data in and data out you should see small pulses of voltage on the meter. This shows your Garmin is putting out the Nema signals. Now, If you are sure the wires are hooked up properly to the 4000 ( pretty straight forward) Turn on the Garmin and get a fix then plug in a course preferably 180 degrees to the way you are pointing. Press the two 10 degree buttons together and release. The 4000 will start beeping at you. When you hear this press them together again. Your 4000 should then cycle between. Distance to wpt. heading to wpt and cross track error. Let me know if this works. Murray
