Hi We are new owners of a Hunter 23. Does anyone have advice regarding boat insurance? The company that issues my car/home policy gave an estimate of $350/year and suggested we look for a competative quote. Thanks.
reccomended me to ski-safe. $200 for the year. I'm going to look into BOAT-US this year..uhoh. My policy expired today, but the boat is out for the winter. Perhaps I'll renew next spring..do quotes change seasonally?
My H260 is insured under BoatUS trailer boat program. Great customer service and their "Seaworthy" newsletter is a real plus. It deals with the root cause from actual claims.*
I am with USAA they no longer write boat policey but act as the agent for Progressive. I have been most always happy with USAA and trust who they would pick.I have also heard that boats that size are often covered under a house policey check with your agent for your homeowners policy.
I pay 150 bucks through my home/auto underwriter (State Farm). Agent explained the key (for his company anyway) is the home port of the boat (where it is kept.) So, if you can find a nice, protected place to keep the boat, that may help. You can still sail up to Fundy if you like, but "home base" dictates the rate.
but just a marine insurance agent would be qualified to provide you with advice of what coverages you may need according to your type of boating. Get a quote from BoatUS and compare coverages with what is offered through your auto insurere. Check fuel spill coverage, check equipment replacement due to accidental or incidental damage, check liability limits and boat valuation considerations. Do get on the water towing coverage which is provided separately; towing costs are very expensive averaging $200-$300 per incident and out there in the water you may not have many other choices but to use them.Good luck.
