I received insurance quotes from two companies for my boat and I was wondering if anybody had dealings with them good or bad.

1. Markel American Insurance (400.00)
2. Old United Casualty Company (485.00)

My in-laws are in the insurance business so I once asked them this same question and among the one's he recommended for our boat is Markel. No clue about the other one.

Did you check with BoatUS.

Check these guys out and see if they have replacement cost or agreed upon values too.

There has only been positive freeback on BoatUS over the years. They handle claims very professionally and they understand the boat business.

We pay $580/yr with an agreed upon value of $80k.

I've had good experience with BoatUS over the past few years, but seeing your rate and agreed upon value, I'm going to call them and try to re-negioate my premium. I pay nearly as much as you do for my 1990 Hunter 27, although I did add a few extra coverages including winter freeze and snow...

The quote from BoatUS was $800+ and my Allstate home and auto broker is at $400 for the same or better coverage plus no limits on crusing zones. I was shopping last week and spent hours on this.

I believe that you have a replacement value policy with Allstate not agreed upon value.

Proof of an insurance policy is really only evident when you need to collect from them.

A lot of the difference in the policy costs have to do with your location. A friend was insurance on his mid 80's H'31 and they paid around $1200, we were only paying $300 in our area.

The California delta is a fairly safe place to have a boat. No hurricane/nor'easters etc. We have earthquakes that "normally" does cause much of a problem. Our area also does not have freezing issues either.

I think Markel has a good reputation. They are used by USAA for boats that they do not insure themselves. USAA is a great company open to veterans and their families. That said, the Markel quote was substantially higher than my boatus policy. BoatUS has a great service reputation as reported by Practical Sailor. They were tops.
