Hunter 37.5 Shell Point Harbor Marina LLC
We bought a Hunter Legend 37.5 and need to get insurance. Which company is the best? Also, we were given a Survey from the previous owner. Can the survey be used if the insurance company needs one? Thanks in advanced for your help.

Progressive is decent for a big company. They didn't require a survey from me.

The survey was on January 27, 2023. We got our copy in May of 2023.

I've used BoatUS insurance which is currently underwritten by GEICO for 40 years. I always found the rates fair and the company easy to deal with on the 2 claims I've submitted long ago.

Do your homework on boat policies. There are 2 basic types, Agreed Hull Value and Cash Value. AHV policies tend to be more expensive, however the payout incase of a total loss are much better. For a boat your size, don't use a rider on your homeowner's policy.

Whether a new survey is needed will depend on the company and the boat's age.

I use State Farm for my boat insurance since I already had home & auto with them. I have never had a boat claim, so not sure how good they are in that respect. Hope I never find out.
State Farm used an older survey (boat value is only $30k, so not a huge policy)

Progressive is good. One claim years ago and great service. Guy buying my boat went with State Farm. Consider an umbrella through your auto insurance if you do not already have one. A lot of liability on the water.

Upon buying my 40 plus year boat, I contacted my homeowners policy agent and the company issued a boat policy. A year later the company decided to abandon the boat insurance business. I checked a boat insurance broker and BoatUS (Geico Insurnace the underwriter). Received a fair policy at an acceptable price. Have not changed. Insurance for older boats can be tricky to acquire. Especially for new boat owners with limited boating experience.

I would explore your current home owners insurance company.
At boat shows you may find an insurance broker that could be helpful.
There is the group association path for insurance from BoatUS.

I have mine insured by Chubb.
The best advice is to read the policies closely and shop for quality coverage; not just low premium.

For liability only you won't need a survey, but they'll still want to know your boating knowledge and skill.
I have chubb full coverage for local but it really is only local. I carry a supplemental State Farm liability (only like $55 year) on my 410 which covers all of US and Hawaii (out to150 nm) which was my destination and needed for the Marina. My Chubb policy did not/would not cover me in Hawaii.
Full coverage for crossing the Pacific singlehanded I could not get.

Mostly within s California, Ensenada to Santa Barbara, and local islands.
