On a smaller boat they can normally be insured on home owners policies. Why don't you contact them to see what they say.

Why insure a 30+ yr boat anyway? Just get the liability insurance.

Put yourself in their shoes. How are they going to access the value? If you want to insure a boat you have to find one thats many still in the market. They only insure to the average market value. So dont put a brandnew turbo charged super duper motor or gold plated faucet in a really old boat.

Your home insurance should cover it to a certain degress. Need to check the policy carefully.

You may want to get the boat surveyed. With a good survey by a reputable surveyor the insurance companies may want to take another look at it.

Was there a salvage title on this boat or something of this nature? I ask because that would be a red flag to the insurance companies.

My biggest 2 cents is that the boat should be insured by a company like boat us because you will want to have that insurance if you manage to have a fuel spill!

Any insurance company that will write you a $500,000 liability policy will want to know what shape the boat is in, usually requiring a survey. We just switched our policy and had to provide a copy of the survey, receipts showing we bought the materials to make repairs and a letter of disclosure to cover the items we could not find receipts for.

Anyway, check with Foremost Insurance about a liability only policy. We shopped BoatUS but they had too many exclusions for us. "Can't go offshore, Can't stay in harbor during named storms, Can't untie dock lines without permission." 'f' that. Check with your home insurance agent and your car insurance agent. We were pleasantly surprised.

Since BoatUS insures my '88 boat without asking for a survey, there may be other unrevealed facets to this story...
I wonder if the problem is that they do not want to insure many more boats in Florida? Lots of insurance losses in the SE part of the country.

Maybe you ran into an underwriter that, for whatever reason, will not tell you the straight truth.

Shop around some more. Lots of insurers out there. There's bound to be one that wants your premium $ and is a solid company.

Best,
L

We have an 88 cat and AAA insures it along with our homeowners and autos.. we pay $148 per year for $500 ded, $300,000 lab,$5,000 med, $100,000 uninsured, $36,000 physical, etc. We have upgraded a couple new things and should probably talk to them about that, but so far so good.

I'm thinking the same. BoatUS insures my '82 C25 as well, no survey, agreed value on their Yacht Policy. No problems at all.

Maybe the OP wants more insurance than the value of the vessel? Who knows.
