It's time to renew my insurance policy on our 84 H31. Thanks to the very active hurricane season here along the gulf coast, my premiums are going to be triple over last year! Does anyone know of an insurance company that does not require an out of water survey to write a policy on a 20+ year old boat? My premiums are going to be high enough without the added cost of a haul out and survey!! Thanks, Bob Rutland

I had no idea about boat insurance when I bought my Oday 23; I just called my broker and asked for a quote. He came back with a policy from Progressive that I have since learned is quite good. It is an "agreed to" value policy, which means that if the boat is a total loss, they pay a set amount that does not vary with age or condition. No survey was required. Seeing as how the amount is more than I paid for the boat, I am happy with it. I don't know if this is available or even desireable for a larger boat.

Yes, I have a 1996 37.5 and it is insured through Progressive. Thee agent I used said they had the best prices for the coverage. I got it at the time I bought the boat so I was hauling it out anyway. You might want to check with the Katrina victims that had Progressive as I saw some not so good comments at first. I was a little uneasy with my agent's response when Rita was approaching as he couldn't really tell me who would pay for my boat to be removed if it sank in the marina. I had a post on this site back at the time discussing insurance so you might want to look for that to see if there is any information you can use. Tom s/v At Last

When we bought our boat, a 1979 Peterson 34, the agent came with Progressive. The premiums were reasonable and I cannot remember if they required a copy of the survey. Since the boat had a stove, our combined homeowners/auto insurance would not insure the boat.

State Farm does mine and they include a $500 towing clause. Much better than boats US.

My boat is a 1979 O'Day 25. Have BoatUS and I only pay $100 per year. No survey required. I also had BoatUS insuring my Catalina 22 for about the same price. Never had a claim though.

Keith, not the same coverage.
Keith: State Farm & most of the automobile insurance companies do not have replacement cost insurance. They are covered based on depreciated value. Big difference when you boat is totalled.

This subject {insurance} came up a few months ago and using a car insurance company was thought to be a bad idea by a few, I double checked my policy and decided to stay with Progressive. I think it was 40 or 50 percent cheaper than Boat Us. Do your own research and good luck on what ever you decide, Jack

A few years ago with Progressive I had a claim for towing and major hull repair. Progressive did an excellent job. Not only paying for the repair but directing me to a first class fiberglass boat repair company. After this repair they did not raise their rates. I have since moved on to Allstate who has better rates when linked with car and home insurance.

When I bought my boat (a '76 Ericson 23) I contacted BoatUS and they at first wanted a survey, but after some discussion settled for a couple of photos. I know that's not the same dollar range you are dealing in, but it seemed to me they were very reasonable. This is something I'm not used to finding when dealing with larger companies.
