Peggy, I think somewhere in your forum and if not somewhere else here I have seen postings dealing with what not to do if you have an uninsulated Ice Box as I do on my 76 Hunter 30.

I understand that gluing styrofoam or other insulation to its outside creates a perfect habitat for mildew and other mold, but I don't recall any solutions being offered.

The icebox as it currently exists is essentially useless as its completely uninsulated and there is some heat transfer from the engine bay to under the sink compartment which shares space with the icebox. Is there anything that can be done to make these more useful as an Icebox? I currently use it as dry storage but it would be nice if it could serve its real purpose so I wouldn't have to dodge the cooler on the cabin floor.

I have thought of wiping it down with alcohol and then applying a spray on foam insulation but not sure this will be effective and mold free.

Any and all help appreciated.

I had an O'Day 27 and Columbia 28 that both had Styrofoam glued on for insulation, and neither had any mold despite having much use. However, having said that, we don't have near the humidity you do. The 32 Hunter and my current 40.5 have spray expanding foam as insulation.

If it were mine, I would look at at buying real refrigeration panels. Just Google for that. Here is but one example:

I would expect you could install them with spray adhesive.

Anyhow, that's just one guy's opinion. I'm sure there are others'. Good luck!

I needed to add insulation to a fridge and an icemaker

I used foam insulation to increase it around the fridge...put 2" thick styrofoam around the ice maker and sprayed foam on top of that. It gets pretty hot and sticky in GA...I never had any mold/mildew problem from any of this insulation...haven't ever heard of it either.

When you do add insulation, whatever you use, be careful that it DOESN'T cover air intakes and exhaust fans.
