Has anyone found a good way to mount instruments on a 29.5 pedestal? I just bought a Garmin 740 'cause I need a larger screen for my older eyes. It's a little too big to surface mount on the wheel side of the pedestal. The traveler is on top of the pedestal, so my only option seems to be on the forward side. The only thing I can come up with is to mount it on the cup holders. Has anyone found a pod or some other mount that is secure and looks good?

Hey Partner I have a 295. I replaced the bottom on the drink holder and mounted it there. If I had to do it all over I think I would remove the sea hood and secure the unit forward so it's positioned better for sight. I inquired just like your doing. Best of luck on your Chartplotter.

Thanks guys,

Sailm8, I like your setup, but your pedestal is different than mine. My "guard", if that's the right term, is triangular and aft of the traveler. So it's hard to mount anything to it.

I'm not the original owner so I can't speak for sure but it looks like you get a different pedestal with a cabin top mounted traveler.

How about the traveler? I spent the better part of three months working on new lines lol . Only to discover the splice reduce the 'travel'

Do you mean the control lines that move the traveler from starboard to port, with the eye splices at each end of the traveler? I want to replace mine 'cause they are all mildewed, but I'm afraid that a new eye splice will be too fat and limit the traveler movement. I'm still new to all this, but it's hard for me to see where 18" of traveler movement does much to change the sail shape.

Hey Gary, I agree with you... that 18" seems like no big deal, for sail trim... My traveler show no mildew... what do ou think is causing the mildew?

Thanks, dave

This is how my 295 is set up. Since this picture was taken, I bought an iPad and plan to velcro it on to the cover of the radar.
Hey Sailm8, please, how is you iPad configed to your instruments, or rather , how are you using your iPad?

Thank, Healeyman (dave)

Healeyman, Iwas planning to velcro it to the cover of my radar, but after using it last weekend it seems handier to just let my wife keep it on her lap. She is a great navigtor and can call out marker and route when we are on the ICW. Otherwise she plays games. This is the thread that got me thinking about the iPad: http://forums.hunter.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=146873

I might still change my mind and mount it but I need more time to finally decide.

You don't need wifi. You only need wifi to use some of the features like searching for articles about marinas etc that would be online. The basic chart plotting features are all preloaded and stay in the iPad after the initial download. If you subscribe to an additional charge phone service, you can get wifi info that way. You do need the wifi, phone carrier model. I don't think the basic (cheapest) works.

Dave, I bought the boat used, and they were like that when I got it. They seem much worse than any other lines, even the main sheet which is in the same area. Don't really know the source.

For what it's worth, here is my solution. A RAM 109V-1U. It's really solid, and can swing out of the way of the main sheet if necessary.
