Instruments and cockpit lights!

Yes, The boat had a none working knot meter on top and a analog nonworking depth sounder down where I put the cockpit light. then there was a p.o. Installed small cheaply depth sounder under the old knot meter. It all looked very bad. I'm pleased with the new look, makes her look well kept and "salty". I wanted the vintage look of the moor gauges.Blitz said:

Below is a pick of the prior set up on the cabin. I couldn't find one of the old knot gauge. do you think those were original?

No one really understands electricity....except God...and then it tends to be a little hazzy even to him/her (being politically correct). Does pffft...what was that?, ring a bell.
Great job Keith, as always! I really like the look of the lit dials on the gauges.
I know your season is starting to pick up. I've got just under two more weeks in the water and then I pull it for the year. I'll do a bit of sailing (including a regatta next weekend) and I've got a couple of jobs to complete before I put it away for the year. Still it's been a good year for sailing.

Keith, I love the look of your instrument cluster and I know what your saying when you wanted to keep the retro analog look, I like it too.
What is your top instrument? Is it a wind meter that tells you direction and strength? Looks great!
My 23 has the original SR Mariner analog knot and depth meters, the knot meter was working but the depth was not, I called the SR Mariner company in NY and the techie their told me to send them to him. He fitted new complete bodies with with new glass, replaced a transistor in the depth guage and calibrated both instruments. A new transducer was included along with new white guage covers, clamps and gaskets.
It cost me just over $200, but I now have original instruments that look brand new.
The nice thing about having a paddle wheel knot meter (speed over surface) is that the difference in speed readings between it and the gps (speed over ground) is the speed of the water current.

The instrument on the top is the apparent wind speed and wind direction.
That's good information on the paddlewheel I don't know if I ever would have thought of that.
Another thing I never thought of was trying to contact the manufacturers of the original instruments that were on the boat. It sounds like you got a really great deal on the refurbishment.

Those look fantastic Keith. I too have the SRMariners like John. They don't work but I have to figure out the spaghetti monster of wires hiding behind the gauges first-- could be wiring issues and not gauge issues. I don't believe my gauges have bulbs in them right now. 
How to test existing gauges?
While we're on the subject, I'd like to troubleshoot my gauges but am electrically challenged. I am figuring that the correct way to test would be to power on the instrument circuit on my 12V panel and then connect a multimeter to the pos side of a gauge and then other lead to ground--voltage indicates power to circuit. Then remove the negative wire from gauge and test from neg side of gauge to a grounding point to see if the gauge is functional--should show some amount of voltage, right? If this is correct and the gauge tests as functional, then I need to look for wiring shorts and if the relevant transmitter is still functioning.
Is this the general idea? Am I getting warmer, colder, or just getting older?

I'm afraid I have to stop and think real hard just to get through the basic wiring jobs. Testing the instruments heads would be one level complexity above my pay grade. If you are wanting to see if they are getting power, then I could probably do that. Johnny - I would be very interested in your results. Please send the link as I have a speedo that is non fnctioning. Turn on breaker for 'Instruments', and Depth comes on, speedo is blank. Have not tried any troubleshooting as this is a paddle wheel speedo, and PO said it never really worked for him. That paddle wheel speedos seldom worked for more than a day/two after being splashed.
