I CURSE the HAMMERHEADS who installed the thru-hull instruments where they either could not be removed without a haul-out (depthsounder), or without a skinny-armed octopus, (knotmeter)!! The former is oozing water and the stringer against which it is located blocks the internal "bar nut" from tightening. Epoxy, here I come, with a prayer that the water has not found its way into the fiberglass hull!!!... Sympathy is what I need right now..

Under the step?

What year Richard? Are your transducers under the v-berth step or by the head? And are you sure that you want to use epoxy? When the instrument(s) die then what? I think that I would cut the frame(stringer), make a little arch so that the nut can be turned. And if impossible to get at the frame then I would cut open the sole right over the frame. Take off the nut, surround with 4200(not 5200), and tighten her down. At the next haulout I would enlarge the hole and seal the perimeter with epoxy and then reinstall. I added two new transducers in two new holes that way. I left the originals which are still working. Fortunately, I guess, on my 1979 they are in the center v-berth locker. Sympathy won't help. You need time and patience.

abandon them

I've got 2 thru hull instruments and I feel they are just waiting to sink the boat. I'm having them plugged and glassed over.

thru-hulls

Hi ED - Mine is an '84, with a shower stall. The c/l wall of that is close to that of the hull and blocks access to the thru-hulls from above. The oozing depth sounder is located about 3 inches from a c/l stringer, and is thoughtfully equipped with a tightening lever instead of a nut so that it cannot be tightened.. or loosened... (or removed) . The knot-meter paddle is thoughtfully located beneath the shower-stall pan where there is maybe 8" clear..
