I currnetly own a Hunter 25 built in 1978. This is my first boat and I want to install the E-Z jack system of lazy jacks but have become confused by the boom on the boat. The boom on the boat floats when the sail is up. By this I mean that you have to release the boom and it drops about 6 to 10 inches and I do not know if this was standard on the boat or if a previous owner added it when they changed the main sail to a racing sail. I am considering getting a new main as well and if I could just leave the boom in one spot it would make everything so much easier but I do not have any info as to the original boat specs.

It's standard

My '81 25 also has sliding gooseneck. This downhaul-capable system was standard from Hunter for a few years. If you are not going to be a meticulous adjuster of the mainsail and plan to have only one mainsail for regular use, put the gooseneck where you want it and leave it. Then you can measure for sail and install lazy Jacks. On the other hand, if you buy the sail first (lots of places to buy "already made to fit" sails for Hunters) then adjust the gooseneck according to the sail, THEN install the lazy jack.
