You are talking about a 20 lb anchor!!!
Not much need for a windlass. Also you are going to need a chain locker where the chain/rode can fall into to keep the chain/rode engaged in the windlass. You typically need at least 12 in of drop to the TOP of the chain pile when the rode is all in. The geometry for a 28' boat is probably not going to support a suitable chain locker.
All of which is why you don't see windlasses on small boats. They simply don't have the room to install a working windlass.
You could always get the first mate to weight anchor ;-)

Yep, that's it. There's just no room to install a winch or a place to store the rode without doing major FRP surgery.
I get the wife to motor slowly forward as I pull in the rode. Works well for us but we're usually anchoring in mud so breaking free isn't bad. Now the big wad of viscous river bottom on the anchor is a different story :cussing:

Would it be possible to fit a windlass and hand feed the chain/rope to the well? Imagine the skipper is incapacitated and 2nd mate has to quickly drive the boat back to Martin. She'll be struggling with anchor if no windlass to help her.

Major FRP surgery can do almost anything :) I've seen a manual windlass on a smaller boat like ours and it might be possible to mount it between the locker and the forward hatch and feed it into the locker as it's being brought aboard. Or, cut a hole in the locker lid for clearance of the windlass . . . ? Don't know what requirements are for an electric one ????

After some thought generated by this message; I've instructed the wife that if I'm incapacitated enough that she has to manage the boat by herself to a marina; that she should just let the rode go and back away until it disappears into the water. I'll not lose sleep over the replacement costs of an anchor, 8 feet of chain and 150' of rope.
