We are in the process of replacing our original STOWE instruments with Raymarine ST60's. The ST60 manual only shows mounting options that require access to the rear of the instrument. This is a problem with the 37 Legend as the instruments are set into the Hatch Cover which does not have any rear access. We clipped a bezel off one of the ST60 instruments and found 4 holes that look like they would take 4 black self tappers that are supplied with each instrument. I am a bit concerned about taking this approach as the manual does not say anything about it. However, when balancing that against having to rip the Hatch Cover off, then re-install and re-bed it again, the "wack in the four screws" approach looks very attractive. Has anyone ever taken this approach and if so, did it work out OK?

A Little Care

David, I front mounted a ST60 instrument set using the four holes exposed by removing the cover. I had to trim down the screw heads to get them to clear and you have to be careful about removing the covers after you have clicked them into place. A small right angle screw driver worked for me whenever I wanted to get the covers off. It will work just be carefull.

On a prior boat...

..I had Raymarine instruments mounted to a black plastic face that was then screwed into the console. Thus, removing the screws holding the face on allowed all the instruments to be tilted forward for access behind them. You could do this in your location. Good luck whichever route you choose.

How about a nav pod on the binnacle post?

I had to replace my old datamarine instruments, and chose to upgrade wit hthe ST60 package. I never liked the bulkhead-mounted instruments, because it limited seating against the bulkhead. My prior boat had pods mounted on binnacle post, which was a great deal easier to see from most angles in the cockpit. I got the ST6o installed in a nav pod and had the steel "frame" around the binnacle post extended. I'm lovin' it!

Thanks for the info - here is Raymarine's response

I contacted Raymarine, they said it is OK to mount it from the front with the four screws. We had to make some rings to make the holes smaller. We stuck with the location above the hatch on the bulkhead as it is out of the way, and there isn't much room for a binnacle in our cockpit. Cheers, Linda
