I am considering adding slugs to my main sail. How far apart should the slugs be installed? Is there any special location ie at the stave locations? The luff is 23'9".

????

Maybe I'm wrong, but you should have some sort of slug or slider, to attach the main to the mast. If not, I can tell you about a friend of mine who has broken thier mast because they didn't rig it with the sail slugs. (Apperently he was extremly hung over, and he had Hobie 14', and just forgot to put the slugs in the track.) I would believe that it would be extremly hard to trim your main, and you would end up with a mid-ship spinnaker. Like I said I may be wrong and you have some other kind of rig. Cheers TJ

Try Sailrite

I did this on two previous small boats and I believe I put the slugs about 18" apart. And I got that suggestion from a representative of Sailrite at a boat show. Sailrite sells a lot of sail equipment and is genereally VERY helpful. Give them a call and/or check out their web site for info.

Slug spacing

My H23.5 has the slugs sewn in place at the end of each batten pocket then they are evenly spaced at 18 or 20 inch intervals in between. A loop of canvas tape about an inch wide is passed through the hoop in the slug then sewn on the batten pocket. The in between ones are mounted through eyes in the canvas and don't have to be sewn. Guess which ones are more likely to break! Originally, there was some sort of adhesive under the sewn on loops but it was just tacky and wouldn't provide any holding power. I'm not sure what the purpose was. Ken S/V Wouff Hong
