Any owner installed such mid-ships? If so, plz advise as to where installed, etc. Hunter advises that the toe rail will not support one; and the jib track is too short and too far inboard and there doesn't seem to be access from underneath the deck to afix a backing plate. Ideas, suggestions are welcomed.

midship cleats

I have a legend 35 and installed midship cleats five years ago. I made a block out of teak to raise the cleat above the toe rail. Then I drilled through the block where the cleat meets the teak. I removed one bolt from the toe rail and drilled a hole for the second bolt through the toe rail. The 10" cleats were purchased from Hunter. There is no real stress on the cleat as the load is dispersed throughout the toe rail. good luck

Bob, thanks for idea but won't work on Vision

as there is no toe rail per se. Rather, they glassed over a "rail" which does not have a backing plate. Pretty much all it does is provide a raised edge for the side deck/walkway and channel water/runoff. Little goofy, but that's what it is. A midship cleat would come in awfully handy.

I'm sorry...

but that is part of why the Vision didn't last. I did the same as Bob on my 35.5. Teak blocks to raise the 10" stainless cleats above the toe rail with stainless through bolts and backing plates, only real way to do it. Hunter has some pretty short "vision" with some of their model changes. Look at the "cleats" you can add to your jib tracks...if they come back far enough aft, since the Vision wasn't set up to carry a proper genoa.

Add a Genoa Track

Looking at the few photos available on this site of Vision 36's, you don't seem to have any easy options. Since there isn't a Genoa track far enough back to add cleats to ---- Perhaps another Vision 36 owner has reinforced the side deck from below and added a Genoa track with a series of 1/4-20 bolts typically spaced about 4" and thru bolted presumably with a reasonably wide backing plate. Don't know if you want to go to that extent, presumably cutting away or milling out a portion of the interior liner to add aluminum backing plates epoxied to the underside of the deck - then trim out the headliner with Teak after everything on deck is installed. Maybe you'd be willing to do it for improved sailing performance with a larger headsail?
