Installing oil change pump

I want to install a small pump for changing oil in my Yanmar 62hp and the Onan 8Kw generator mounted above it in my Hunter Passage 42. Rather than finding a storage space for a portable unit, I intend to simply mount and wire it in the engine compartment. I would appreciate any input on the following: - Do I attach the hoses permanently (and if so, where) or do I insert a hose in the dipstick tube each time ? - Are there any hazards/drawbacks to the permanent installation idea ? - Any suggestions on the brand of pump to use and source for buying it (I see a few listed in the marine catalogs) Also, when looking at other boats I saw one with an adapter that attached where the oil filter normally goes with two hoses leading to an oil filter mount in a much more practical location (about 18 inches away) . I understand these are often used in auto racing. I would appreciate any input on using this kind of extender and sources for buying one. Thanks for your assistance Victor Robert s/v Bluebird

oil change pump

I assume that the engine in your Hunter 42 is in the 4JH series. I know that Kohler frequently uses Yanmar diesels but I don't know what you have. If what I post here doesn't answer all your questions, com'on back. The best way to change your oil is by sucking it up the dip stick tube with a hose placed tightly over the outside of the tube. You could permanently mount a change pump just about anywhere and rout the hoses ot the proper locations. You could make the installation on the 4JH permanent by putting a T in the dip stick tube, ABOVE the oil level in the pan. You have to be sure that the T installation does not change the length of the dip stick tube. One of the more commonly used pumps is the Reverso, so named (I think) because you can also pump the new oil back into the engine. Diesel Direct can supply the pump. We can also supply a kit so that your oil filter can be mounted in a new location. A draw back with the oil change pump mounted above the oil level is that it might inadvertently get turned on. I'm sure that you can install some redundancy to keep this from happening - second switch, cap on the discharge, valve on the intake, etc. We have rebuilt one Volvo and replaced one Universal that had their oil change tube mounted on the bottom of the pans and the fittings failed. Mount your suction high and keep the pump high also. The above could possibly apply to your generator engine as well. You could use the same pump with a little valving. If you need further info or the parts with which to make the installation, plese let us know.
