I have a '93 Hunter 235 and the jam cleats just do cut it. I was going to put on some new cam cleats when I relaized I had noi idea how to properly mount them so as to not tear a hole in the deck when I applied tension to a sheet or haylard. I took the panel off that is inside below the winch assuming I'd have working room. Not a chance! Must I cut a hole in the inner shell to properly put a back plate on anything I mount on the deck? I saw where someone had mounted cam cleats on the cockpit bulhead just to the right and left of the companionway. Must I drill throught he outter and inner hull and have back plates all about the cabin as decoratice pieces? Any help will be appreciated. Hayden

Spinlock PX Cleats

Check the archives I put these on mine and they work way better than do cam cleats

im the guy who put them on the bulkhead

i put cams on the bulkhead as a place to secure the jib sheets not halyards i did drill through the outer bulkhead but not the inner i got access through the winch access plates in the cabin top i used washers as backers, as for replacing the clam cleats on the roof the ones for the halyads ect there is a alluminum plate inside the fiberglass where they are affixed remove the old clams purchase the cleat of your choice and mount them right on the raised square surface where the old ones were fill the old holes with a sealent then mark drill and tap holes for your new cleats and attatch with stainless macine screws

Carl, Thanks for the input. I didn't know about the aluminum pad. When you put in the new cam cleats, did you remover the winch? Did that give you enough room to get the waashers and nut inside. It looks really cramped inthere to try to do much work. I like your idea and location, I'm just having trouble seeing it come together. Hayden

i didnt pull the winches

i removed the covers under the winches in the cabin roof inside the boat i mounted them as high as possible on the bulk head basically start by wrapping the sheet around the winch as if you were using it then place the cam under the sheet were it drapes down on the bulkhead outline its location in pencil then position the cam as high as possible on the flat of the bulkhead before it turns into in roof mark and drill i believe it was 10-24 hardware it should protrude the length of the cam the lenght of the washer and nuts plus 1/4 inch for the bulkhead if the mounting bolt is the exact size it helps alot with attatching the nuts and washers cause as you noted there is not much room

spinlock

I added spinlock on my 240. They work pretty well. I made teak blocks about 1 1/2" thick, and mounted the spinlocks with a very slight inward angle. My boat has access plates in the cabin and I used the same original backing plates with new holes drilled. The system works well, I can usually control the sheets sitting in the weather corner seat. Although, to adequatly lock, I'm using 7/16" sheets that are kinda large and heavy. I probably could have used a smaller size spinlock. There are also warnings to not winch the line in tight. The sheets usually need some load for the locks to work properly. Hope this helps and good luck.

What I did on my '93 23.5

For the halyards and keel line I removed the existing hardward and bolted a one inch hardwood block to the existing holes. This raised the cleats and greatly improve the angle of approach for the lines. Then I attached new ronstan nylon jam cleats. They are cheap and they work far better than the ones that were there before. For the jib sheets I added Winchers to my winches. It was so easy and cheap I had to try them. Now I don't want to sail without them!
