Hi Ken, we have a different model boat than yours, a 1991 P42, but I suspect yours would have similar requirements for what you want to do.
Five years ago Hunter Marine, at that time, had a stay sail chainplate kit for $250 that mounts to the aft anchor locker bulkhead. Our mast had everything ready to go including the halyard fish line. The rigging should be off the shelf, e.g., winches, halyards, sheets, stay sail, stay, etc., none of which our boat has. At the time I felt spending $10K was not worth the gain unless we ventured off shore, whereby the stay sail would provide heavy weather sail alternatives that the furling head sail does not, IMHO.
As an alternative to adding a stay sail for storm tactics look into adding a third and fourth reef point to your main assuming you have a traditional main and that it is of off shore construction. Most production boat makers use coastal construction to keep production costs down.
Another consideration is to hank on a storm sail over your furled head sail. Sail makers make such a sail just for these kinds of requirements.
All my sailing has been in PNW protected waters using a traditional main, 150 genoa and asym spin. Perhaps others who have off shore experience can chime in on these suggestions, alternatives, etc. I just wanted to let you know that your thread was not being ignored.
