I have just purchased a Garmin 182C GPS with an external antenna. I want to install it on a 1997 Catalina MK II. I plan to mount the unit on the pedestal using aEdson center mount platform part # 831-95-100 above my instruments. the problem or should I say challenge is the antenna that comes with the unit is preconnectorized. I will be mount this on the aft rail. Are there any secrets as to running the cable with the BNC already attached the pedestal. I haven't really surveyed the job yet and I'm looking for input from people who have attempted this. The power cable should be as much of a problem since it is pigtailed and I can pick up power from the lower engine instrument panel on the pedestal.

Just Moved a Garmin GPSMAP 180

Brian.... I just moved the antenna location of my Garmin GSPMAP 180 last week. I called Garmin about cutting off the BnC connector so I could reroute the cable. The said it's just basic coax cable and cutting the BnC connector was no big deal. I asked about shortening the wiring since there's like 20 feet of it and I only need about 10 feet. He told me that they recommend NOT shortening the wire, but as long as you leave at least 3 feet, you should be ok. I took the easiest route and cut the BnC connector off, routed the cable, then put on a new connector from Radio Shack. I only took about 3 inches off the cable. One last thing. The center conductor (at least on MY unit) was twisted strands, not a solid copper wire like on TV coax. I don't know if I got the wrong BnC connector, but the center wire was too fat and flimsy to make the proper connection....so I took about 3-4 wires out of the twisted group, used solder to make the rest of the wires stiff and it worked just fine. Good luck! Jim s/v Dolphin

rear pulpit mount

I mounted some speakers under seats I made on the rear pulpit of my 28. I drilled into the vertical pipe thinking I would drop the wire into the inside area buy the tank...the puppit has a stainless steel base to it that is NOT drilled...and not an easy feet to drill coming up from down by the tank. The other ( port) side is drilled since the wires for the stern light come up thru the vertical pipe....good luck dave

Another thought

I too have a Catalina 28 and a 182c mounted at the binnacle. I went back to Boat US and got the 182C with an internal antenna and ran the power up through the pedastal. I did this 6 months ago and it is a clean installation using the Edson arm mount. Neil

I did it

Hey there. Installed a Raytheon 425 at the helm last year, with the mushroom type antenna on the stern pulpit on my C-270. They are right when they say that the pulpit is not drilled at the base, but with good sharp bits it is possible. Entire pulpit must be removed, with is no big deal. Both Raytheon and the dealer said it was ok to cut and splice the cable. It works just great, and looks professional, also. Good luck!
