I just purchased a 1998 Catalina 28 and wonder about install backing plates on the deck when we have a fiberglass shell on the cabin ceiling deny such access. What have others out there done to resolve this. This would be applicable to all boats that have a fiberglass moldeed ceiling installed as most catalinas do have now.

The plates are glassed into the deck

All of the deck hardware has threaded backing plates glassed into the deck already. It makes it tough to add anything additional, but replacement in kind when something breaks or wears out works quite well. As for adding additional hardware, a friend added two winches to his C-320. To get at the under side of the starboard side deck, he cut an enormous hole in the liner, installed the winch (with the backing plate) to the deck, then closed the hole with an Beckson inspection port. (OK, so the hole in the liner was just BIG, not enormous). As I recall, the inspection port is not exactly under the winch, so he had to manuver everything between the liner and the deck to get them to line up, but it did work. AS for adding things to the cabin top, an inspection port might look a little ugly, but it would work. Steve Alchemist #909
