I need some advice on installing the male snaps on my Hunter 25 for companionway canvas. I have been searching the archives and remember reading that you should drill the holes bigger, fill them and pre-drill the holes for the snaps into the filler. I can't seem to find the article. What is recommended? A two-part epoxy? Also, if someone has done this before, I would appreciate some advice on where to start, do I install the cover for a tight fit, etc. By the way, I ordered the companionway canvas from this site's chandlery. Great quality and price. I will probably order the bimini next.

Snaps

HI, I drilled out the holes slightly oversize and then used a 30 min. two part clear epoxy. I got it at an automotive store. I think its by Permatex. It comes in a syringe type package. I mixed mine up on a piece of cardboard. I got the mixing sticks they had and they worked good to apply it as well. I put tape around the hole so only the hole showed. Filled it up and took a wire to make sure the hole was full. Let it set up, remove the tape and then I took a razor blade and trimmed the top off just to make sure it was flush. Then redrill the hole to the correct size. Drill slowly because if you get the epoxy to warm it wants to gum up. If you drill any on the sides make sure it isn't just solid fiberglass with no core. Other wise you end up filling a drilled out hole and have to come up with plan B. Then you have these little clear spots showing on the sides an your wife will ask what those are for. I don't know if that the correct way but it worked for what I did. Rob Morton S/V Euphoria h23

Rob, Thanks for the advice. You nailed it with the comment about my wife. Barry

Hi Barry, our companionway canvas cover ...

did not use snaps. Instead the top part was attached to the wood slider handle (various ways) and the bottom had a pocket for a piece of lead strip to slide into. The weight of the lead strip held the canvas cover against the companionway coaming and yet it was east to lift up to enter or leave the cabin. No drilling was necessary. Terry
