Guys, I have a 2004 Hunter 306, which I often sail alone. I hate the cleats for my jib, because I have to leave the helm to reset them. I want to replace them with cam cleats, which I liked on my last boat. I've never replaced any deck hardware. Any suggestions? Do I have to remove the fabric ceiling in the cabin to access a reinforcing plate (if so, how do I remove the ceiling?), or can the whole thing be done from the deck only? Thanx!

Normally there is a backing plate that is embedded in the fiberglass. You need to drill and tap the area to mount the cam cleats.

I'm not sure I understand. I have self tailing winches on my 28.5 and no need for cam cleats.

John, your boat is very different from Orcon's 306. Go to Boat Information and check out a few pictures of the 306

Dan,
As a followup, there will be times when the cam cleat will be overstressed' even with the smaller jib you (and I and others) have. For those times, you have to use the self-tailing winches on the cabin top.
