Installing an asymmetric sprit

Hi folks, I have been pondering adding a moveable/temporary sprit for my asymmetric spinnaker instead of using the "beads around the furled jib" setup that's currently on the boat. Questions are: - I'd like it to be removable, so thinking that the forward fitting would be some form of clamping device. Is there anything commercially available? Or am I looking at custom manufacture? (I'm good at epoxy work so not afraid of building my own) - material for the sprit: C/F? Aluminum? Diameter? - Do I need to include some kind of wire "bracing" or will the sprit be strong enough on it's own? BTW, the boat is a '75 Ranger 28. cheers, jcm

Seldén has a new gennaker bow sprit kit

From the Selden Site: Basically, you fit two pad-eyes on deck in-line with a bow bracket. The bow bracket is a stainless steel ring with a polyamide (PA) inner lining through which you slide the bow sprit to active position. When you are done with the gennaker, slide the bow sprit back and secure it to the aft pad-eye. The inboard end features a spring loaded plunger for easy attachment to the pad-eye. The gennaker tackline is preferably pulled through the bow sprit. The line enters a well rounded hole in the outboard end and comes out through the inboard end. Three different bow brackets will be available for various modes of installation. The kits are available through the Seldén dealer network. http://www.seldenmast.com/page.cfm?id=5581

Better than Selden!

Here’s an easy-to-make bowsprit, seats in the anchor locker. This will throw the spin ahead of the main, less blanketing. Tack line and 2 sheets permanently deployed for quick setup. (Note that the link here has 2 pages of pix and directions.)
