installing accumulator

Hi All, My pump for the fresh water system runs continuously. I am replacing the accumulator ( this was the least expensive alternative ) and need to know if there is anything I should do to bleed lines, prime the pump, etc. before turning on the power to the pump. I am assuming that all I need to do is replace the accumulator, reconnect my water lines and then power on the pump.

why is your pump running all the time? do you have a leak or just use alot of water. i installed a new pump on my unter last year and am very inpressed whith the water presure.

Wayne,

If the pump is running all of the time there is almost always a leak somewhere. There is the posibility that the pressure switch on the pump could be bad, but I'm leaning tword a leak. Check all of your hoses with the system persurized.

thanks pat

This is why I am replacing the accumulator. I just needed to know if I needed to bleed the lines or anything once I have the pump accumulator replaced.

bad pump or leak.

Wayne: You may also have a bad pump. The first thing I would do is bypass the accumulator. If it still cycles, you may want to try to hunt for a leak. If this is not fruitful, then I would suggest that you try replacing the pump or getting new parts for your pump. I just replaced my noisy pump with a Jetflo Sensor VSD. Very quite and lower power consumption. They also do not need an accumulator tank.

Bleeding the pressure water

Wayne, The water system is goig to bleed it's self. When you get done installing the accumulator, turn on the power and open the faucet. You will get some spurting then the water will flow normaly. Close the faucet, the pump should cycle off in a few seconds. If the pump doesn't cycle off there might still be a leak. Hope this helps.

Does the accumulator have a recharge valve? If the pressure drops in mine, you can hook up a pump to a valve similiar to a bike tire and bring the pressure back up... Brian

thanks to Pat and Brian

Thanks for your sugestions. I will try them this evening.

Wayne, make sure you have a solid 12 volts at ...

the pump under load. Low voltage will also cause the pump to run continuously. Terry

I had the same problem and i found a small leak in one of the water pipes as it ran under the holding tank.

Thanks Jim

Jim, I've checked all the lines that I see and I haven't found a leak so far. I have removed the pump and I am getting it checked tomorrow. If that comes back ok then I know it has to be a leak in one of the lines or the tanks. I have not been able to examine the stern tank just yet. Any suggestions on that?

Pump running

Wayne, i just recommissioned the boat and had the same problem. No accumulator on my system. Checked all lines, everything OK. Was about to take the pump out when I went in the settee where the hot water tank is to get a tool (my tool boxes fit perfectly there) and noticed some water on the floor. Thought the tank had busted ! Filled and pressurized the system with the pump once more and found my problem. The pressure valve on the hot water tank was leaking even when tank was cold !!! Easy & cheap Home Depot solution. Problem solved. Pump works like a charm. Good luck

Pressure Water System

You know, you have received almost every tip that can cause your pump to run constantly. You are probably drawing air into the system from some place. This suggestion is way to simple but can cause your problem, it did for me. Check your tank valves. The tank you are trying to draw water from should have plently of water in the tank and the valve should be open. The second tank that you do not want to draw from the valve should be CLOSED. If the valves are both open you are drawing air form the empty tank and your pump will run but not draw water. To simple, but that is waht could be happening, Worth a check to see. We al get caught up in all the technicalities some times and forget the basic simple stuff. Good Luck.

Its working now

Many thanks to everyone that responded. I took the pump in and had it checked and it was the valves in the pump itself that were the problem. The pump could not make a good seal. I had it rebuilt for about $40 and I now have pressure at the galley and the forward vanity. Again, many thanks to all.
