Installing AC on Hunter 33.5

Has anyone installed air conditioning on a 1988 Hunter 33.5? I am considering doing this myself and wondered if anyone had any thoughts on where to place the unit and vents. We are on Lake Erie and this addition would make the boat so much more comfortable for everyone.

I have installed air/heat on our 1993 version. I'm not sure if it's layed out the same as your model year. We raised our nav station and installed our 16,500 BTU unit there. It was fairly simple to run vents to the aft and main cabin utilizing the hanging locker just aft of the nav station. Running the forward vent to the V-berth required more effort to install. I used the space behind the port settee back rests and under the vanity to get me to the port storage closet in the V-verth. Hear is a picture of the finished install. Nice job! Looks very professional. Does the enclosure provide enough cushion to reduce the noise? Thanks for your comments and pictures.

We can still watch TV or carry on a normal conversation in the main cabin but it is a bit noisy. There wasn' much I could do to prevent it. The cold air return vent allows the compressor noise into the main cabin. It isn't bad in the sleeping quarters however. I do want to re-install the unit later this year to put in some vibration dampeners on the mounting hardware. Thanks for the "Very Professional" comment. Good luck with your installation.

Jeff has a great solution and I would have done that on my 30 but my area under the nav station is a little smaller. I installed mine in the aft berth. The berth is so long I just put the A/C unit in the corner and built a cabinet to close it in.

You should sheck out this months (Issue #3) DIY Boat Owner (www.diy-boat.com) article on installing an air condition. It is a great read for anyone wanting to install AC. The article's focus is on a Morgan 30 and he did it in the Forward V Berth. It looks great, and unlike those "made for boats" air conditioners, he brought a small house unit for only $90.
