Installing a Traveler in the Companionway

I have a 1995 Hunter 26. Until now I have not needed a Bimini, however I'm spending my first winter in Punta Gorda, Fl. and I realized quickly that I need a Bimini here.My first thought was to install a 24" Traveler on the step in the Companionway entrance. This would allow me to install a large unobstructed Bimini.However, I'm not sure the construction of the step is strong enough to accommodate the Mainsheet. I am also concerned that the lines would catch on the companionway.My other option is to have the Bimini made to accommodate the Mainsheet at is original position.I would welcome anyones comments or personal experiences with this issue.

Putting Bimini on an h26

When he commissioned my 95 h26, my broker had installed a second "thing" to which the mainsheet attaches on the boom a few inches forward of the stock placement. This allows the bimini to be up without the mainsheet rubbing against the front of the bimini. When I want to go a little faster, I don't use the bimini and replace the mainsheet to the original "thing" -- I can't think of proper nautical term for it right now.

I have a 1996 H26 with a bimini and am thinking about living in Punta Gorda. I would like to talk to you as I plan to visit the area sometime next month to look at property and would be happy to discuss the installation of the bimini. I am in the owners directory.

Bimini

My '95 H26 has a bimini about 5' front-to-back mounted on the stern rail seats. The leading edge is (now) just aft of the boom end by 2"; when I bought the boat it tucked under the boom and there is a spot atop the bimini showing the scars of that arrangement. Usually, at least 4 people can take advantage of the shade: 2 in the sternrail seats and 2 well aft on each side of the cockpit. It's also pretty easy to get a look at the sails with this size bimini. I'd post a pic but apparently only the thread's original poster has that option. If you like I'll e-mail it to you, or post it in photo forum. I considered a traveler too, but opted instead for a Garhauer rigid vang which gives at least as much control over sail shape as a traveler IMO, and was easy and cheap to install. Plus it doesn't obstruct the cockpit or companionway.
