I recently purchased a Raymarine ST40 Knot Meter with a through-hull transducer that I wish to install on my H260 (hate to see them go). I would like to do the installation myself, but don't want to wreck the "Commander" in the process. Has anyone had any experience with this type of installation. I know ballast tanks and the fresh water tank must be avoided, and access to the hull through the cabin may be difficult. Any help/tips would be immensely appreciated. Tom

Knotmeter

I've never installed a knotmeter on my H260 because my handheld GPS gives this information. Thus no holes in the boat. Might want to think about that.

if you are going to drill holes

Put them next to the bilge pump just off the plywood insert in the hull. I have tried a few transom mount fish finder/sonar transom mounts and have had less than desirable results. Through hull on a sailboat away from rudder and keel interferance is the way to go. Just seal them up with a quality marine sealer. My 2 cents on raymarine 40 series stuff, I would spend the money and go with 60 series, it works better and interfaces with other NEMA equipment. As far as GPS input goes, it gives you speed over ground, but not speed through water. If you are dealing with current or wind drift its nice to know both.

I've done it

Tom, I installed the ST60 speed and depth transducers on our 260 this summer. I also installed the ST60 wind indicator and the instruments for all three. I meant to post pictures of the project, but haven't gotten around to it. I'll get them snapped this weekend and post them, if that's okay. Fair winds, Mike
