Installing a Thru-Hull Transducer

I have a Hunter 20 and I plan on adding a depth sounder and a knot meter. From my experience, thru-hull mounted transducers give much more accurate and consistent readings than their transom mounted counterparts. Has anyone installed a thru-hull on a Hunter 20? If so, can you give me any direction on location, hull thickness, etc? I contacted Hunter's tech support email alias and they said they had never installed a thru-hull on a H-20 (so much for the experts). I would appreciate any assistance you can offer. Thanks, Chip-

May not be the best place.

Chip: I do not know about your model, but Russ King posted something on these smaller boats back in June. "Yes, it can void the warranty". Just check out his post before you make any decision on a thru hull transducer. http://www.sailboatowners.com/forums/archiverview.tpl?rid=2001171150856.1

Plastic outer hull not an issue here

Steve, Thanks for the quick reply to my post. The Hunter 20 was built back in '84 and it has a fiberglass hull (no hi-tech plastics like newer ones). So the issue Russ posted back in June does not apply to my old boat.

In Hull

Chip, you might want to look at the in hull types. I put one in my 240 and it works great. Very accurate, easy to install. Mine's from Standard Horizon. Just make sure you take your time to find the best location. The directions tell how to go about it. Better than drilling a hole below the water line.
