Since I got a chartplotter, we've started doing a lot of night sailing. Not having to spot nav aids in the dark has opened up a whole new world of sailing for us.However, I've decided to install a spotlight, since the battery-powered handheld solution seems like it's destined to fail at a crucial moment--like when I'm trying to find the unlit bouys marking the narrow, shoal-surrounded channel of my home marina. My question is, where is the best place to install the light? If I mount it on a forward stanchion of my 336, I am afraid it will take a beating from the jib during tacks. If I mount it on the deck (say, in front of the mast) I am afraid that it will be too low to be effective. What are your experiences with this? Any lessons learned? Thanks.
