Installing a Spotlight

Since I got a chartplotter, we've started doing a lot of night sailing. Not having to spot nav aids in the dark has opened up a whole new world of sailing for us. However, I've decided to install a spotlight, since the battery-powered handheld solution seems like it's destined to fail at a crucial moment--like when I'm trying to find the unlit bouys marking the narrow, shoal-surrounded channel of my home marina. My question is, where is the best place to install the light? If I mount it on a forward stanchion of my 336, I am afraid it will take a beating from the jib during tacks. If I mount it on the deck (say, in front of the mast) I am afraid that it will be too low to be effective. What are your experiences with this? Any lessons learned? Thanks.

What makes you think that a permanently mounted spotlight can't fail at the worst possible time?

I have a hand held unit

that plugs into a cigarette lighter connected to my boat's batteries. It works great and as long as I have battery power on the boat I'm in good shape. It give me flexibility to hold the light hoigh or low and move about the boat. US Boat and West Marine sels the lights for less than $30 and the cigarette lighter with wires, etc cost me about $15. I have light when I need it but can get it out of the way when I finished withit. Hayden
