the rudder indicator on the C-30 using the raymarine S-1 wheel auto pilot. What is the work around for installing the rudder indicator? I do not seem to have room to do the install!!

RAYMARINE AUTO HELM

ATTACHED IS LINK TO AN ARCHIVE DISCUSSION ON THE SAME TOPIC. ALSO, RAYMARINE IS COMING OUT WITH A NEW AUTO HELM (S-5) WHICH DOES NOT REQUIRE A RUDDER POSITION SENSOR. YOU MAY WANT TO WAIT FOR THAT TO BECOME AVAILABLE. GOOD LUCK

Yep....my old post

I should really take some pictures of that install. I am proud of the way that it worked out. If you look at the quadrant you will see that there is a hole in the quadrand that is 90 degrees from the front of the quadrant. I put the part of the rudder sensor in that area. I then cut a place in the back of the rudder box for the sensor arm to run through. Just make sure that the slit is wide enough and long enough that it will not touch the sides of the Rudder box. I have an L Bracket that bolts to the inside of the seat from the helm. The sensor is mounted to the bottom of the L Bracket. I am not going to be going down to my boat until Next Friday or Saturday. I will try get some pictures of it later on. The S1 on my boat works great. I am really happy with the unit. I wish that they had put out the new unit when I bought mine, but I still like the sensor because I can tell how the rudder is sitting. Good Luck

installing s1 auto pilot

I have also installed a S1 Pilot on my boat and have not been able to get it right. I have read that it is not nessisary to in RPS. My fluxgate compass is mounted in the rear bearth. After swinging the compass, it only has a variation of 2degrees. The problem with my boat is that it wants to hunt from side to side. I have adjusted the steering cables to remove slack, but did not seem to help. I am thinking about moving the Fluxgat compass next and see if that helps. As a last resort, I'll try to install the RPS.

I would love to see pictures. I have e-mailed Raymarine & they were as helpful as a screen door on a submarine!!!

Russ, and others with 'wandering' wheelpilots,

I have had considerable success adjusting my Raymarine wheelpilot without a RPS to function in different sea conditions by using a set of adjustments known as "The Catalina Cocktail" and found on the Raymarine support website. I'll paste it below in it's entirety, I've never had to try step 4, changing the drive type, and you'll note that it's not generally prudent to do so. Optimal setup for the ST4000+ on a Catalina 270 Question I have a ST4000+ wheelpilot I recently installed on a Catalina 270 sailboat. At the West Coast Catalina Rendevous the Raymarine rep said that you guys have some recommended default settings that work best on Catalinas. I'm having trouble getting the autopilot to track well, even with the rudder gain at the lowest setting. The boat has a tendency to oscillate. Can you supply me these recommended setttings? Thanks. Answer This boat has a relatively low number of turns on the wheel from lock to lock. I would recommend you change the following setting from the default in this order. Please do these one at a time while evaluating performance after each change. Also, make sure that you have gone throught the compass linearization with a deviation of 10 or below. 1. Change the Rudder Gain from 5 to 2 2. Change the Auto Trim from 3 to 2 3. Change the Response from 1 to 2 4. Change the Drive Type from 1 to 2 Please avoid changing the drive type if possible. If the turns on the wheel from lock to lock are less than 2 then you might try the Rudder Gain at 1.

Did you get it done?

Just curious to see how it went. I still haven't gotten down to my boat (fuel to driver there is getting too expensive). Hope that everything went fine!

rudder solved

i had computer problems so I could not get your diagram but I did as you suggested & besides cutting the allthread bar for my first misapplication & then having to weld it back together since the thread was different on everything that I could find to buy. I should get it completely done this weekend. the ss bracket is more like a platform that I had made & I pick that up today. I will get back to you with the total success next week.

Nice!

I hope that everything goes smoothly for you. I like my S1 on my boat. It is a nice unit.

finished & successful

all loose parts connected & wrong holes now plugged & power connected & low & behold it all works. I could not have done it with out your help on the rudder indicator. I have not take her out for a test yet but all signs point towards a successful installation. I am not sure if i mentioned that at the same time I put in the st60 wind gauge with the wind vain not the rotovector (not sure what the diff is) & with seatalk the are all working. I had a ST60 depth indicator already on the boat & I should be able to connect it to the system (seatalk) but I am not sure what the benefit would be. Do you have any thoughts on the idea. I wll take a photo this weekend & post it.

Very Cool

Glad to hear that it worked. That is great. I love the unit on my Cat 30 and it has seen a lot of use. I am considering the gauge at some point in time but not this year. I have the old transducer on my masthead but it seems to be broken and the instrument display isn't on the boat (it must have broken long before I bought the boat and it was just taken off). It would be nice to have an actual nav-pod on my boat. I have a teake board that I manufactured to hang instruments from. My knot meter (which doesn't work) and my depth finder, which does work) are on the bulkhead near the companionway. I should have bought all three instruments when I bought the autohelm. Live and learn!
