Any advice or pictures regarding how to mount a Raymarine rudder position sensor on my 1989 C30 would be appreciated. I have an S1 autohelm which will not work without the sensor. THANKS!!

Just installed one

First tip....if you use a marina to install the autohelm use an estabilished marina....Read my post on the All Sailor's Menu for an explination. I did actually come up with the way to install the sensor... The piece that is shown going onto the "tiller post" is actually mounted onto the starboard side of the quadrant. Then a place is cut in the back of the rudder box (it is about 5 inches long and 1 inches high). This cut will be just below where the board hangs for your propaine locker. Make an L shaped bracket to mount the sensor on. Mount the sensor on the rear bulkhead, in the rear lazzerette, underneath the propaine locker. My sensor is upside down and it is pointing towards the port side of the boat. The main things is that the sensor is 90 degrees to the location where the bracket is mounted on the quadrant. The rudder sensor is the hardest thing in the install. I should be able to answer any other questions because I ended up showing the mechanics at the marina the way to put the autohelm in....I should have just done this myself instead of being lazy....hind sight is 20/20.

BAD OBSESSION--THANKS

BAD OFSESSION, THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSE. I DID READ ABOUT YOUR INSTALATION AND THE PROBLEMS. MAYBE I AM LUCKY TO BE AT A MARINA WITH NO SERVICES. DO YOU HAVE ANY PICTURES? DOES YOUR BOAT HAVE A T SHAPED COCKPIT ie 1989? I APPRECIATE YOUR HELP. I ASKED RAYMARINE AND YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT THEY DID.

No Pics Yet

I don't have any pictures. My catalina is a 1990 (your boat and my boat are MKII). I did talk to Raymarine. They said that the best time to call is between 1 and 5 on Firdays. One quick note....I didn't have to cut the piece that goes from the bracket on the quadrant to the sensor. The rudder sensor takes a lot of room! Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

No sensor installed on my C30 MKIII

My C30 MKIII has no sensor installed and works well. Manual refers to sensor but gives little quidance about when they are required and when not. Advantages / Disadvantages ?? Jeff Deja Vu http://home.teleport.com/~salmo/DejaVu/

Raymarine rudder position sensor

I mounted my RPS upside down on the underside of the cockpit sole, forward of the radial drive and on the stbd side nestled amongst the cable conduits and bracket. The geometry worked out great and it didn't take up any additional space. It was easy, took maybe 20-30 minutes.
