Installing a kicker backplate on a 26M

I'm looking for advice on where to install a kicker backplate. I've included a couple of pictures of other MacGregor motor sailors with kicker backplates. One is installed through the transom and the other is somehow mounted above the transom.

Of course, the old adage "the sails are your other form of propulsion" is fine--for a really experienced sailor. I don't intend to try docking my boat into a 20 mile per hour headwind on the sail. I'd be lucky to get away with a boat that still floats.

Anyway, the next time my 70 hp Yamaha conks out, I'd like a backup. If I go through the transom, it seems like I'd have to drill through about a foot of floatation. I know kickers on Mac X's and M's are rare, but do any of you have any good ideas?

Thanks in advance!
