Hello

I had this post in the "Ask all Sailor" thread and was directed to bring it here....

My original post was...

I must be crazy!

Okay I said it so you won't have to (I'm nice like that). I have a wife and three daughters and we have been sailing a lot over the past 10 years. They don't like the port-o-potty.

So I found the parts (tank & head) for installing a marine head... My question is this.....

I've never had to do this pleasant job before so... How does the pump-out work? Is it a vacuum? Does the connection have to fit air tight or do you stick the hose down into the .... stuff.... and vacuum it out?

I think I understand the basics of installation and I found a nice page by Don Casey on-line that diagrams everything...

But it sure would be nice to find a Kit that has the head, tank, hoses, through hull and pump out plate all in one package.

Anybody?

And a nice fellow named Steve in the other forum suggested I look into a pumpable port-o-potty.

Sounds like a great idea. Anyone have a recommendation?

A nice fellow named DannyS posted a link for this MSD on your other thread: http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|51|806|81394&id=902441
Reading the product description it says 'can be installed for overboard discharge or pump out' or something like that. I read that to mean that you would still have to install a deck pump out fitting and plumb it to the tank of the MSD using a good waste hose.
Another question is: are there any pump out facilities where you typically sail? If the answer is 'not so much' then I'm not sure if there would really be a benefit. OTOH, if the answer is 'there is a pump out station on Smith Mtn. Lake' you may be in luck except you may find it tiresome to have to go to the pump out station every weekend.
I am with the others who have said that installing a holding tank and marine head on your Venture 22' will take up too much valuable real estate inside the cabin. I am just not sure that installing a MSD like this and a pump out will be that much better for your ladies. Perhaps you need to think about adding some KO to your port-o-pottie to help eliminate odors (KO = 'kills odors'). Maybe even some kind of air-wick air freshener?

I was thinking I should suggest you get a bigger boat with a head and holding tank already installed but after looking at Smith Mtn. Lake on google maps the V22 sounds about right for that locale. I could also suggest you look at the MacGregor 26 S model sailboat but even though it would give you a larger cabin you would still have the same port-o-pottie problem to figure out.

Good luck settling this one with all your ladies!

CalebD is right, you need the pumpout fitting on deck as well as a vent line to a vent. But in most cases you should be able to plumb that straight up from the Porta potty tank to the deck fitting. Not too much snaking around and minimal hose. You also have the benefit of being able to unhook the hoses and empty the still the porta potty if you're in an area without facilities and have a full tank. Granted, that's not a fun job, but you have that option.
I did this on my boat because when we bought our boat, everything reeked, hoses, tank, everything. So I ripped it all out to let the boat breathe for a while before I install another "proper" marine head system. Our marina does not have pumpout facilities but it does have an RV dump station so emptying ours is pretty easy. We sail in some remote areas without services so I like being able to empty the tank in an outhouse or at a gas station. One last thing that made my decision easier, I bought Peggy's book and as I recall, we needed about a 15 gallon holding tank to be equivalent to a 5-6 gallon Porta potty (this factors in the amount of water needed to flush the waste down and through the hoses to get it into the tank and not to where it's just sitting in the hoses.
Hope this helps!

Hi Caleb

I'm all for the porta-potty. Maybe I'll just use y'alls responses as ammo next time this comes up. Regarding up scaling. I JUST sold my Coronado 25 two months ago so I could afford to buy and fix up this Mac V222. I've decided I did not like being lake locked with a boat I could not tow.

The V222 will be big enough I think once I get it looking nice and feeling comfortable.

I appreciate your thoughtful comments and will take a look at the other link.

Fair winds,

Rob
