Installing a dodger

Greetings all A sailing friend (who is without a computer) recently purchased a 1990 Hunter, 30T model. He is currently installing a dodger and bimini. Problem is his boom extends very low into the cockpit area and will not clear a dodger or bimini. He raised his main at the dock today and I observed that the end of his boom was almost two feet below the goose neck when in the close hauled position. If I were sitting in the cockpit during a tack it would miss my head by only a couple of inches. Is this typical of the 30t model? Might his sail be cut incorrectly? And... is there a standard fix? Thanks Wayne Wall

Kick it Up.

Wayne, I can stand under the boom on my 88 30. This was accomplished by cutting a triangle out of the foot of the main to kick the back end of the the boom up. If it made a difference in sailing I can not tell it. Made my bimini with 6"4" headroom, and got that boom end out of my face.

Miscut Sail?

2 feet below the gooseneck sounds extreme to me! I'd have a sailmaker look at it. David Lady Lillie

It Needs Correcting

The boom on my 30T (1991) remains horizontal or slightly raised when mainsail is raised. Sounds like he needs a sailmaker to inspect and correct a sail shape problem.
