I want to install a depth sounder. Does anyone have a recommended method for mounting the transducer? Inside the hull? Through the hull? Outside the hull? PLease provide details thanks!

If I can do it, any body can I bought a garmin type dept finder and followed instructions, by the way, my wife got a little suspecious when she saw the jar of vaseline in our boat, but I got it to work just fine, even the.... o..... never mind...

The Lowrance unit I bought came with excellent instructions, and a 'special' epoxy for mounting the transducer to the inside of the hull. I tested the location by putting the transducer in a plastic bag filled with water. It was really very easy. Barry

Many newcomers to this site are not aware that the same question they are asking has been asked many, many times before. A quick check of our amazing archives under "installing transducer" will turn up a ton of instructions for you.

In order to "shoot through the hull"
Alf, as you're no doubt aware, you'll have to cut through the interior cabin liner, and excavate some foam floatation to mount the transducer on the inside of the hull. As mentioned, the archives will have many different methods. I'm not really sure where the best location is, in relation to the keel. Maybe someone can chime in on this point. I would buy a watertight round 6" access cover found in most chandleries. Once you've picked your location for the transducer, cut out for the access panel, dig out the foam, and mount the transducer. The access pannel will neatly fill the hole you've cut. I don't have one of those gadgets yet

To test the feasibility of shooting through the hull on my Macgregor, I made a ball of plumbers putty, stuck it to the face of the transducer, then mashed the assembly against the inside of the hull. Worked so well I left it that way. It's been there for three years and still works just fine. I'm sure that the range is decreased but I'm only concerned about shallow water anyway.

Under the seat, in the locker
On our Sandpiper,the transducer is mounted in the lower forward corner of larger underseat starboard locker. I glued a short chunk of PVC pipe to the hull as a well, then used the wax seal meant for a toilet to seat the transducer.
