Installing a 9.9 Yamaha outboars in a catalina 27

I am about to change my outboard on my 27 Catalina but I am told that it will be quite difficult as it will not lock in the up position due to the increased size of the 4 stroke power head. what can be done to resolve this without completely rebuilding the motor well?

Trim the transom

I had the same quandry, decided the easiest way was to trim the center of the transom about an inch and a half or so. Still working two years later. It was a Merc 15hp 2 stroke motor.

Motor mount

I just bought a Honda 4 stroke last year and it fit perfectly in my cutout. Of course, there's no room to spare so I just suffer with the small amount of drag it produces. I've thought about getting one of those lifting engine mounts but...well...$$$. Rob has a Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke and so I'm familiar with the size - pretty close to the Honda. I think you'd have to cut out quite a bit of the transom to get a big enough opening to fit. At least 4", don't you think? If you do that, you should seal up the raw edges with epoxy - a paint job might look nice. LaDonnaPS: If you're wondering, I'm in fresh water that's mild all year - just some slime and no freezing (at least this year).

Yamaha engine for C27

Bob, I just sold my C27 for a C30. When I bought the 27 it had a 9.9 Yamaha already on it. I was very happy with the engine, very quite, very dependable and cheap to operate. The previous owner had a stainless bracket built that bolted through the transom. It looks much like the brackets that are used on the larger outboards where the engine sits on its own bracket, not just hung over the transom. When the engine was tilted in the up position, the entire leg is out of the water and the power head was in the well.
